Challenge we faced
Genium ran live pub quizzes across multiple cities. Their website listed events but gave visitors no reason to stay — low time-on-site hurt search rankings, and booking a game required too many steps. The brief: make the site feel like the game itself, keep visitors engaged, and drop the friction to zero for sign-ups.
The catch: the site was already live with existing functionality. Anything new had to layer on top without breaking what was already there.
Discovery
The core drop-off was happening before visitors ever reached the events page. The site looked generic — nothing communicated the energy of a pub quiz night. Two linked problems emerged:
- Zero interactive hook — visitors read a page and left. No reason to click, no reason to stay.
- City friction — users had to navigate manually to find events in their city, which killed conversion on mobile.
Options Considered
- Full rebuild on a new stack — rejected. Timeline and budget didn't support starting over, and existing SEO equity would be lost.
- Off-the-shelf quiz plugin for WordPress — rejected. Available plugins were too rigid for the game-style UX required and couldn't be themed to match the pub atmosphere.
- VueJS widget embedded inside WordPress — chosen. Delivered a custom, fully themed interactive experience without touching the existing CMS structure. Vue handled reactive game state; WordPress remained the single source of truth for content and settings via the admin panel.
Decision
The project was split into three independent deliverables that could be shipped and validated separately: a visual redesign, a VueJS quiz game, and a geolocation module. This let the existing site stay live throughout development with no downtime or feature regression.
Implementation
The redesign replaced a clean-but-cold layout with warm pub aesthetics — dark backgrounds, typography that evoked chalkboard menus, and motion that felt playful rather than corporate. Every decision served the same goal: make it feel like you were already at the quiz night.
The quiz game was built as a self-contained VueJS app mounted inside a WordPress page template. Questions and answer options are managed entirely through the WordPress admin panel — no developer involvement needed to update content. The game mechanic is simple by design: one question, four options, instant feedback. The result is a shareable engagement loop that keeps average session time well above baseline.
The geolocation module detects the user's city and surfaces the correct event schedule and photo gallery in a single click. No city selector, no dropdown, no extra navigation step. For a business running events across multiple cities, this was the single biggest conversion lever — users landing from city-specific ads now see relevant content immediately.
Outcome
Visitors who engage with the quiz spend significantly longer on site, directly improving the SEO signal. Event registrations switched to a one-tap flow — no account required, no form to fill beyond name and phone. The geolocation module eliminated city navigation friction for multi-city visitors. All existing functionality was preserved without a single regression reported post-launch.
