Choosing an OS: You Do Not Choose Linux, Linux Chooses You

This slide comes from my cybersecurity course at Teclab. It is a flowchart that picks an operating system for you based on your personality, and it made me laugh.

Flowchart "Choosing an OS": if you fear technology and your daddy is rich you get macOS, if not ChromeOS; if you don't fear technology but don't care about privacy you get Windows; if you do care, the Linux distro depends on whether you have a life: Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora for yes, Arch and Kali for no

If you fear technology and your daddy is rich, you get a Mac. If he is not, a Chromebook. If you are not afraid of technology but do not care about freedom and privacy, Windows. Everyone else lands in Linux, and then the only question left is whether you have a life: Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora if you do, Arch and Kali if you don't.

In practice, Linux picks you

The joke assumes you choose. In real work it goes the other way. Almost all infrastructure and servers run on Linux, so you end up adapting yourself to be able to work with it. Not because you love freedom, but because that is where your code runs.

So Linux chooses you, not the other way around.

My combo

I ended up with the setup that suits me best: a work laptop on macOS and every server on Linux.

I touch Windows very rarely now. Sometimes I even miss it. For years I worked closely with the Microsoft stack, .NET and SharePoint, and I regularly administered Windows Server machines and deployed solutions on them.
